It is also troubling because the writer clearly knows what kind of club it is. Still, Henry would like to meet the nephew he hasn’t seen for over two decades. What he wouldn’t like is to recall the time of scandal and disgrace which turned him into silent, shabby Mr Tregowan, always sitting in the darkest corner of the coffee room.

Harry Roberts – also not his real name – has worked himself up from nothing to become butler at the most exclusive members’ club in London. He is discreet, efficient, and utterly dependable. Harry decided early on not to risk the security of his position by being familiar with the gentlemen who frequent Greene’s. But just by sitting quietly in a corner, Mr Tregowan has been testing that resolve for a long time.

Both men know that the distance between gentlemen and servants can never be bridged. But it is Christmas Eve, and the club is deserted. Does it matter, if no one but themselves is going to know?
